EXPERIMENT TWO - Surrealism/ dadism

Through looking at the surrealist's I aim to see if and how a message is put across from the artists point of view matches with the message from the viewers point of view,  particularly as surrealist images can be read in so many ways.

“Surrealism constantly sought to make art of life and to make of life an art.” Indeed, Surrealists intended profound meaning for their works, but demystifying the meaning of a given work can be  overwhelming "

Surrealism in literature is similar in understanding exampled by CS Lewis' nonsense poem the
The jaberwockie  is not supposed to be understood but supposed to be entertaining fun.

Giorgio de Chirico: Love Song

Just from the title of this work I can begin to understand and analyse the image deeper  and interpret the message better . The title 'Love song' Makes me look at the image like a poetic representation and makes me question if the Statue is of the painters lover and whether the Silk or leather glove belongs to her.
The use of Colour is interesting as the earthy colour seem to be used a lot within the surrealist movement at the time using the colours to depict the landscape .

This image Has a background  and a foreground and then the objects bring the character to the piece.

Giorgio de Chirico: The disquieting Muses.

The colours in these are the same as the other Giorgio de Chirco image . The links between the Dadaist movement and the surrealists show faceless and characterless statues who's character and personality is shown  through the colour and light in the surrounding image.

Salvador Dali: The Disintegration of...

I have concentrated on only certain aspects of this image as it is complex in its content.
Dali uses a grid and a repetition of shapes in his work to create direction and flow. The Main Character appears to be the clock which relates to the age old problem of humanity that time is slipping away.

Golgonda ,1953 Rene Magritte

The Colours used in this image are all of muted tones and are naturalistic ,which make the surreal parts of the image stand out even more. The tones used in this image are all relatively similar.
The Fact that this picture was made in 1953 can bring back memories of bombs falling from the sky in the blitz.

The variation in size of the people who are strategically placed  in the sky are all   The visual view point of the people or repeated person are in an arc centred around the middle of the image. In the lower half there are the shadows of the man that create a busier image as well as the grid of the windows that are surreal in their shape and placement with some placed up to the roof tops.

The diagonal lines that are insinuated when looking at the people is a bidirectional diagonal grid which shows a symmetrical and mirrored interlocking image. with an indication of movement due to the diagonal lines similar to rain i other illustrations. However due to the very still and stiff stance that the men in bowler hats are in it is questionable as to weather they are falling or hovering.
The image works to a flat grid line of the houses as opposed to a perspective compared to the people who show distinct depth to the painting . Causing a visual paradox .
There are three main segments that are in the image; the foreground which is the side of the flats, the background which is the sky and the houses in the middle ground.

The chimneys and the roof features merge with the people and help aid to soften the edge between the foreground and background . As well as creating a natural frame for the image.

Rene Magrite, the Son of man

This image is similar to rene's self portrait however it is not what we Initially thought that the Face is hidden it is actually that there are no faces and the top of the torso is hidden.

The affect of not being able to see the face

Kitchen Art - They danced the night away without even taking a break to eat.

The caption with this piece shows the nostalgia which is emphasised by the greyscale colour.

Experiment one
From looking at this modern design image which seems to be influenced by the dadaist movement and in particular the idea of not having a head or face represented literally.

Here i played around with changing the type of utensil and seeing what effect it had on the meaning :
For example wen using a knife fir the male character and the spoon for the female, it changes the way you see the image from a dance to a confrontation.

It is also interesting to note that the spoon seems to give an impression of a more submissive character compared to the fork even when swapping between the genders indicating who wears the trousers in the perceived relationship.

I also played around with changing the head to be a creature and another object
When chaging the faces to be cats and dogs this seemed to change the context of the image due to insinuating anthropomorphism.

I then decided to use another set of objects that seemingly go together like utensils do by using a plug and socket as the heads. This completely changes the impression of what this scene is about and gives an unexpected innuendo .

From these experiments i can identify that the intent of the meaning is most easily change through playing with the content of the scene as opposed to the colour. I believe this is due to the lack of background.

Experiment

From my understanding of the surrealists there use of repetition, symbolism and mood presented in the art is a big part of how a message may be received or interpreted as i believe through my gained understanding of the surrealist's and even illustration a message when not that clear is left to the Audiences interpretation, from what is given

It is important with these pieces to look at them individually and understand through using what we know about the artist and the title of the piece  to creatively dive deeper in to what the  intended message of theme is.

I have taken what i have learnt about Mood ,repetition symbolism and scenery to help create my own surreal image .My intent of the Image is to unnerve the viewer and intrigue them. My topic i chose to use was superstition Using the image of a black cat as the iconic Character or item that is repeated, I used the size of the cats to add a feeling of depth to an otherwise pretty flat but endless background.

I choose the Cat in the position that shows a disinterest in humans but is focused on another being.

I looked in to Options of disconcerting and disturbing Endless scenes in witch to place the cats : Seasides, forests, countrysides, and windowsill views.

I created a Grid to Work towards to help identify the similarities between my experiment and the research on Rene Magrite's and Salvador Dali's pieces. That use pattern and repetition in obvious ways. To give a feeling of unease and a sense of depth I used differing sizes of  the cats .
Creating a rough draft of the background

I chose to use a similar monotone colour palate to the Dadist images to help create the feeling of nostalgia whilst keeping the tonal range that is used in surrealism.

I choose the Sea side as my place to put the cats as i feel it can relate to and cause many Questions for a person to come up with . Firstly;  Cats are Questionably afraid and have a dislike to water so why have them staring out to sea, The Sea can seem like an endless abyss when you look across the sea you can see as far as the eye can across the horizon but there is a limitation to what you can see . When I and others I know stand out to see it can be disconcerting.

It makes the viewer ask Questions to discover my intended meaning , for example;

Why are they all gathered?
what are they looking for /or waiting for?
what do their faces look like? ( as you can see through the bodies )
Is something about to happen ?
